A Chenrezig Sadhana

The Recitation for the Chenrezig Meditation

 

This book contains the recitation for the meditation of the Great Compassionate One called For the Benefit of All Beings as Vast as the Skies.

First refuge and raising Bodhicitta

SANG GYE CHÖ DANG TSOK KYI CHOK NAM LA
Until I reach enlightenment, I take refuge in all the

JANG CHUP BAR DU DAK NI KYAP SU CHI
Buddhas and in the dharma and all the noble Sangha.

DAK GI JIN SOK GYI PAY SÖ NAM KYI
By the merit of accomplishing the six perfections.

DRO LA PHEN CHIR SANG GYE DRUP PAR SHOK
May I achieve Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Repeat three times
 

DAK SOK KHA KHYAB SEM CHEN GYI
On the crown of the head of myself and all beings

CHI TSUK PE KAR DA WAY TENG
on a moon, on a lotus, is a HRIH

HRIH LE P’HAK CHHOK CHEN RE ZIG
Chenrezig arises from this.

KAR SAL Ö ZER NGA DEN T’HRO
He radiates clear white light.

DZE DZUM T’HUK JE CHEN GYI ZIK
He gazes with compassionate eyes and loving smile.

CHHAK ZHI DANG PO T’HAL JAR DZE
He has four arms. The first two are folded in prayer,

O NYI SHEL T’HRENG PE KAR NAM
The lower two hold a crystal rosary and white lotus.

DAR DANG RIN CHHEN GYEN GYI TRE
He is arrayed in silks and jewels.

RI DAK PAK PAY TÖ YOK SÖL
He wears an upper robe of doeskin.

Ö PAK ME PAY U GYEN CHEN
His ornament is Amitabha, Buddha of Boundless Light.

ZHAP NYI DOR JEY KYIL TRUNG ZHUK
His two feet are in the vajra posture.

DRI ME DA WAR GYAP TEN PA
A stainless moon is his backrest.

KYAP NE KUN DU NGO WOR GYUR
He is the essence of all those in whom we take refuge.
 

Make the following prayer, thinking that all beings are making it with you as if in a single voice.

JO WO KYÖN GYI MA GÖ KU DOK KAR
Lord, not veiled by any fault, white in colour,

DZOK SANG GYE KYI U LA GYEN
Whose head a perfect buddha crowns in light,

T’HUK JEY CHEN GYI DRO LA ZIK
Gazing compassionately on all beings to you,

CHEN RE ZIG LA CHHAK TS’HAL LO
Chenrezig, All-Seeing One, I prostate.

Recite as many times as you wish.
 

P’HAK PA CHEN RE ZIG WANG DANG
With joyous faith I prostrate

CHHOK CHU DÜ SUM ZHUK PA YI
To the Noble All-Seeing One

GYAL WA SE CHE T’HAM CHE LA
And to all the buddhas and bodhisattvas

KUN NE DANG WE CHHAK TS’HAL LO
Of the ten directions and three times.
 

ME TOK DUK PÖ MAR ME DRI
I make offerings both actual and imagined

ZHAL ZE ROL MO LA SOK PA
Of flowers, incense, lights, perfume,

NGÖ JOR YI KYI TRUL NE BUL
Food, music and much else.

P’HAK PAY TS’HOK KYI ZHE SU SOL
All you assembled Noble Ones, please accept them.
 

THOK MA ME NE DA TAY BAR
From beginningless time until now,

MI GE CHU DANG TS’HAM ME NGA
I confess all the ten unvirtuous acts

SEM NI NYÖN MONG WANG GYUR PAY
And the five actions of unlimited consequence

DIK PA T’HAM CHE SHAK PAR GYI
I have committed when influenced by obscuring passions.
 

NYEN T’HÖ RANG GYAL JANG CHHUP SEM
I rejoice in the merit of whatever virtue

SO SO KYE WO LA SOK PA
Sravakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas

DÜ SUM GE WA CHI SAK PAY
And ordinary people have gathered

SÖ NAM LA NI DAK YI RANG
Throughout the three times.
 

SEM CHEN NAM KYI SAM PA DANG
I pray you turn the wheel of the dharma

LO YI JE DRAK JI TA WA
In the form of the greater and lesser vehicles.

CHHE CHHUNG T’HÜN MONG T’HEK PA YI
For as many different aptitudes as are present.

CHHÖ KYI KHOR LO KHOR DU SOL
In the motivations of all sentient beings.

KHOR WA JI SI MA TONG PAR
I beseech you not to pass into nirvana

NYA NGEN MI DA T’HUK JE YI
Until samsara is completely emptied.
 

DUK NGAL GYA TS’HOR JING WA YI
Look with great compassion on all sentient beings

SEM CHEN NAM LA ZIK SU SÖL
Who are lost in an ocean of frustration and sorrow.

DAK GI SÖ NAM CHI SAK PA
May whatever merit I have accumulated

T’HAM CHE JANG CHHUP GYUR GYUR NE
Become a cause for the enlightenment of all beings.

RING POR MI T’HOK DRO WA YI
May I myself become, without delay,

DREN PAY PAL DU DAK GYUR CHIK
Foremost among protectors of beings.
 

SOL WA DEP SO LA MA CHEN RE ZIG
I pray to you, Guru Chenrezig.

SOL WA DEP SO YI DAM CHEN RE ZI
I pray to you, Yidam Chenrezig.

SOL WA DEP SO P’HAK CHHOK CHEN RE ZIG
I pray to you, Perfect Noble One Chenrezig.

SOL WA DEP SO KYAP GON CHEN RE ZIG
I pray to you, Lord Protector Chenrezig.

SOL WA DEP SO JAM GON CHEN RE ZIG
I pray to you, Lord of Love Chenrezig.
 

T’HUK JE ZUNG SHIK GYAL WA T’HUK JE CHEN
Buddha of Great Compassion, hold me fast in your compassion.

T’HA ME KHOR WA DRANG ME KHYAM GYUR CHING
From time without beginning beings have wandered in samsara,

ZÖ ME DUK NGAL NYONG WAY DRO WA LA
Undergoing unendurable suffering.

GÖN PO KHYE LE KYAP ZHEN MA CHHI SO
They have no other protector than you.

NAM KHYEN SANG GYE T’HOP PAR JIN GYI LOP
Please bless them that they achieve the omniscient state of Buddhahood.
 

T’HOK ME DÜ NE LE NGEN SAK PAY T’HÜ
Compelled by evil karma, gathered from beginningless time,

ZHE DANG WANG GI NYAL WAR KYE GYUR TE
Sentient beings, through the force of anger, are born as hell-beings

TS’HA DRANG DUK NGAL NYONG WAY SEM CHEN NAM
And experience the suffering of heat and cold.

HLA CHHOK KHYE KYI DRUNG DU KYE WAR SHOK
May they all be born in your presence, perfect deity.

OM MANI PADME HUM
 

T’HOK ME DÜ NE LE NGEN SAK PAY T’HÜ
Compelled by evil karma, gathered from beginningless time,

SER NAY WANG GI YI DAK NE SU KYE
Sentient beings, through the force of greed, are born in the realm of hungry ghosts

TRE KOM DUK NGAL NYONG WAY SEM CHEN NAM
And experience the suffering of hunger and thirst.

ZHING CHHOK PO TA LA RU KYE WAR SHOK
May they all be born in your perfect realm, the Potala.

OM MANI PADME HUM
 

T’HOK ME DÜ NE LE NGEN SAK PAY T’HÜ
Compelled by evil karma, gathered from beginningless time,

TI MUK WANG GI DÜ DROR KYE GYUR TE
Sentient beings, through the force of stupidity, are born as animals

LEN KUK DUK NGAL NYONG WAY SEM CHEN NAM
And experience the suffering of dullness and stupidity.

GÖN PO KHYE KYI DRUNG DU KYE WAR SHUK
May they all be born in your presence, protector.

OM MANI PADME HUM
 

T’HOK ME DÜ NE LE NGEN SAK PAY T’HÜ
Compelled by evil karma, gathered from beginningless time,

DÖ CHHAK WANG GI MI YI NE SU KYE
Sentient beings, through the force of desire, are born in the realm of humans

DREL P’HONG DUK NGAL NYONG WAY SEM CHEN NAM
And experience the suffering of constant toil and poverty.

ZHING CHHOK DE WA CHEN DU KYE WAR SHOK
May they be born in the excellent pure land of Dewachen.

OM MANI PADME HUM
 

T’HOK ME DÜ NE LE NGEN SAK PAY T’HÜ
Compelled by evil karma, gathered from beginningless time,

T’HRAK DOK WANG GI HLA MIN NE SU KYE
Sentient beings, through the force of jealousy, are born in the realm of demigods

T’HAP TSÖ DUK NGAL NYONG WAY SEM CHEN NAM
And experience the suffering of fighting and quarrelling.

PO TA LA YI ZHING DU KYE WAR SHOK
May they be born in your realm, the Potala.

OM MANI PADME HUM
 

T’HOK ME DÜ NE LE NGEN SAK PAY T’HÜ
Compelled by evil karma, gathered from beginningless time,

NGA GYAL WANG GI HLA YI NE SU KYE
Sentient beings, through the force of pride, are born in the realm of gods

P’HO TUNG DUK NGAL NYONG WAY SEM CHEN NAM
And experience the suffering of change and falling.

PO TA LA YI ZHING DU KYE WAR SHOK
May they all be born in your realm, the Potala.

OM MANI PADME HUM
 

DAK NI KYE ZHING KYE WA T’HAM CHE DU
May I myself, through all my existences,

CHEN RE ZIG DANG DZE PA TS’HUNG PA YI
Act in the same manner as Chenrezig.

MA DAK ZHING GI DRO NAM DROL WA DANG
By this means may all beings be liberated from the impure realms,

SUNG CHHOK YI DRUK CHHOK CHUR GYE PAR SHOK
And may the perfect sound of your six syllable mantra pervade the ten directions.
 

P’HAK CHHOK KHYE LA SOL WA DEP PAY T’HÜ
By the power of this prayer to you, Most Noble and Perfect One,

DAK GI DUL JAR GYUR PAY DRO WA NAM
May all beings to be trained by me take karma and its effect

LE DRE HLUR LEN GE WAY LE LA TSÖN
Into account and practice skilful acts diligently.

DRO WAY DÖN DU CHHÖ DANG DEN PAR SHOK
May they take up the dharma for the good of all.
 

DE TAR TSE CHIK SOL TAP PE
By having prayed like this one-pointedly,

P’HAK PAY KU LE ÖZER T’HRÖ
Light shining from the holy form

MA DAK LE NANG T’HRUL SHE JANG
Removes all impure karma and bewilderment.

CHHI NÖ DE WA CHEN GYI ZHING
The outer realm becomes the real of bliss.

NANG CHÜ KYEN DRO LU NGAK SEM
The body, speech, and mind of beings within it

CHEN RE ZIG WANG KU SUNG T’HUK
become the body, speech and mind of Chenrezig.

NANG DRAK RIK TONG YER ME GYUR
All knowledge, sound, and all appearances become inseparable from emptiness.

Meditate like this as you recite the mantra
 

OM MANI PADME HUM
OM MANI PADME HUM
OM MANI PADME HUM

Recite as many times as you can.
 

Finally, let the mind remain absorbed in its own essence, without making distinction between subject,object and act.
 

Then repeat:

DAK ZHEN LU NANG P’HAK PAY KU
Everyone appears in the form of Chenrezig;

DRA DAK YI GE DRAUK PAY YANG
All sound is the sound of his mantra;

DREN TOK YE SHE CHHEN PO LONG
All that arises in the mind is the great expanse of wisdom.
 

GE WA DI YI NYUR DU DAK
Through virtue of this practice

CHEN RE ZIG WANG DRUP GYUR NE
May I now quickly achieve the All-seeing One’s great state.

DRO WA CHIK KYANG MA LU PA
And to this same state may I come to lead

DE YI SA LA GO PAR SHOK
Every being, not one left behind.
 

DI TAR GOM DE GYI PAY SO NAM KYI
With all the merit of these thoughts and words

DAK DANG DAK LA DRAL T’HOK DRO WA KUN
May I and every being to whom I am joined,

MI TSANG LU DI BOR WA GYUR MA T’HAK
When these imperfect forms are left behind,

DE WA CHEN DU DZU TE KYE WAR SHOK
Be born miraculously in the realm of Great Bliss.

KYE MA T’HAK TU SA CHU RAP DRO NE
Crossing ten stages directly after birth,

TRUL PE CHHOK CHUR ZHEN DON JE PAR SHOK
May emanations fill the ten directions in service from the benefit of all.
 

GE WA DI YI KYE WO KUN
Through this virtue, may all beings

SO NAM YE SHE TS’HOK DZOK TE
Gather the accumulations of merit and awareness.

SO NAM YE SHE LE JUNG WAY
May they attain the two supreme kayas

DAM PA KU NYI T’HOP PAR SHOK
Which arise from merit and awareness.
 

JANG CHHUP SEM NI RIN PO CHHE
As Bodhicitta is so precious,

MA KYE PA NAM KYE GYUR CHIK
May those without it now create it.

KYE PA NYAM PA ME PA DANG
May those who have it not destroy it,

GONG NE GONG DU P’HEL WAR SHOK
And may it ever grow and flourish.
 

Seven-Verse Prayer to Guru Rinpoche

HUM, OR GYEN YUL GYI NUP JANG TS’HAM
In the Northwest of the land of Orgyen,

PE MA GE SAR DONG PO LA
In the centre of an open lotus,

YA TS’HEN CHHOK GI NGO DRUP NYE
Having attained the wonderful and most perfect siddhi,

PE MA JUNG NE ZHE SU DRAK
The Lotus-born of great renown,

KHOR DU KHAN DRO MANG PO KOR
Surrounded by a host of dakinis

KHYE KYI JE SU DAK DRUP KY
That we may follow your example,

JIN GYI LAP CHHIR SHEK SU SOL
Please approach to grant your blessing.

GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUM
 

OM AH HUM VAJRA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUM
 

GE WA DI YI NYUR DU DAK
Through virtue of this practice

OR GYEN PE MA DRUP GYUR NE
May I now attain the Lotus-born One’s great state

And to this same state may I come to lead

Endowed with the glorious ocean of qualities of freedom and ripening,

DU SUM GYAL WAY CHI ZUK KAR MA PAY
Karmapa, embodiment of all the victors of the three times,

ZHAB PE TEN CHING DZE TRIN GYE GYUR CHIK
May your lotus feet remain firm; may your activity increase.
 

CHO YING LONG NE GONG PAY TSAL TRUK
The energy of your wisdom issues forth from the Dharmadhatu.

TE SAM ZHIN SI PAY TSUL TEN NGO TSAR WA
You display wondrous, intentional rebirth.

DU SHUM JON KA KHAM SUM CHO KYI JAY
Dharma Lord of the three realms, you are unequalled in the three times.

ZHAB PE TEN CHING DZE TRIN GYE GYUR CHIK
May your lotus feet remain firm; may your activity increase.
 

TONG TO DREN REK TAR LAM JOR DZE CHING
Your place all who see, hear, touch, or think of you on the path to liberation.

KHYEN TSE NU PAY ZI JI RAB BAR WA
You blaze with ajestic wisdom, kindness and power.

SA SUM MUN SEL GE LEK O TONG GYE
You dispel the darkness in the three levels of existence and radiate a thousand light rays of virtue and excellence.

ZHAB PE TEN CHING DZE TRIN GYE GYUR CHIK
May your lotus feet remain firm; may your activity increase.
 

LAB SUM TSUL TRIM TSANG ME GYEN DZE CHING
You are adorned by the three trainings and pure morality.

KHE TSUN ZANG DANG TO SAM GOM PA YI
Your being is fully ripened through learning, nobility, benevolence and hearing, contemplation and meditation.

TUK GYU YONG MIN ZHEN GYU DROL NU PAY
You are able to liberate others.

ZHAB PE TEN CHING DZE TRIN GYE GYUR CHIK
May your lotus feet remain firm; may your activity increase.
 

RI DREL TEN DANG KHE PAR DRUB GYU KYI
You fill the whole world with the non-sectarian doctrine,

RING LUK DRI ME CHO TSUL NAM DAK DI
And especially the stainless Dharma tradition

DZAM LING YANG PAY KYON KUN GENG DZE PAY
Of the practice lineage.

ZHAB PE TEN CHING DZE TRIN GYE GYUR CHIK
May your lotus feet remain firm; may your activity increase.
 

DRANG YE SAM DE NGO TSAR GYU TRUL GYI
Although you display innumerable oceans of

KO PA GYA TSO NA TSOK TON DZE KYANG
Inconceivably wondrous miraculous forms,

SHEK ZHUK TRO PAY TSEN MA KUN DREL PAY
You are beyond the elaborations of “leaving” and “remaining”.

ZHAB PE TEN CHING DZE TRIN GYE GYUR CHIK
May your lotus feet remain firm; may your activity increase.
 

DOR NA RIK GYAY KHAB DAK KHOR LO GON
In brief, glorious guru, Gyalwang Karmapa,

PAL DEN LA MA GYAL WANG KAR MA PAY
Pervasive lord of the hundred families and all mandalas,

ZHAB PE TEN CHING DZE TRIN GYE GYUR CHIK
May your lotus feet remain firm; may your activity increase.

TRIN LE CHOK TA KUN TU KHYAB PAR SHOK
May your activity reach everywhere
 

DE TAR RAB GU DUNG WE SOL WE NA
If you are supplicated with such respect and longing, then,

TSA SUM GYAL WA GYA TSO TUK KYE DANG CHO
Through the intentions of the three roots and the ocean of victors,

NYI NAM PAR DAK PAY DEN TOB KYI JI
And through the power of the truth of the pure Dharmata,

KE MON PAY DON ZANG NYUR DRUB SHOK
May these excellent aspirations be quickly fulfilled.
 

This pure aspiration was composed by Tai Situpa, transforming a rebirth supplication for the previous Lord into a supplication for the longevity of the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa, in response to the request accompanied by offering, of Tashi Lhadar, the custodian of the Rumtek Shedra.
